How to launch a brand if you’re not an influencer
So you’ve got a business plan, a manufacturer, and a great attitude—do you also need 50K+ followers to get your brand off the ground?
No!
It helps, in the same way that it helps to have a paid marketing budget and angel investors. But it’s not essential to a thriving, successful brand, and there are more important things to get right at the beginning before you focus on building a community and buying a ring light.
The tidal wave of influencer brands
It’s a pipeline as old as time.
A person pops off organically and starts to build a loyal, engaged following.
They engage in brand deals, starting small, then building to the big leagues.
“I’ve been working on something super exciting the past year that I’ll finally be able to tell you about next month… you’re not ready for this!!!” brand launch.
Influencer balances 60% own-brand promotion with 20% content that made them popular and 20% external brand deals.
And it works (for some). Sammy Robinson has just opened her third One Mile brick-and-mortar store. Sopha Dopha's tank tops landed her TikTok Business of the Year in 2025. Emma Chamberlain won’t stop brewing beans, and by that, we mean an estimated annual revenue of ~$22M.
The success of these brands can’t be separated from the popularity of their maker. Where a normie brand would need to splash $50,000 on an ambassadorship, these brands are getting the exposure built-in.
So where should you put your energy, focus, and investment if you don’t have a following?
EASY.
Make sure your brand has a genuine point of difference.
I’m not talking about:
People are tired, so our supplement has great ingredients to help you sleep.
Our new gloss has hyaluronic acid in it to make lips hydrated and glossy.
A pop culture podcast analysing the hot topics of the week.
I’m talking about:
Establishing a truly unique selling point that sets you apart from your competitors is a step that gets overlooked more often than you think, yet it’s the most important part to unlock cut-through — something that influencer brands generally don’t need to have (respectfully).
I’ve got my USP, what next?
The key fundamentals of the brand. This is where a creative agency comes in (hey). Strategists, Copywriters, and Designers build a unique, solid foundation for your brand to lift off from. Think:
A brand positioning.
This comes out of brand strategy work, where we analyse the landscape, interrogate the target audience, and uncover the white space that your brand should fill. Essential.
A brand purpose.
Your reason for existing beyond profit. It helps to clarify business decisions and marketing efforts so that you’re always aligned on the bigger picture.
A brand personality.
How you talk. And no, ‘confident yet friendly’ doesn’t count. If your brand voice is just Bec from the marketing team’s writing style, it won’t cut through or stand the test of time.
A brand platform.
The creative beating heart where all marketing stems from. Sometimes it’s also your tagline.
This creative, strategic, and intricate brand foundation work is also what sets founders apart from the ones doing it alone with Claude. Real humans know how to hook real humans.
Where does building a community come into it?
Even if you don’t have a personal following, tapping into the culture, resonating with your audience, and building a community is an essential component to building a successful brand. Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald didn't launch Shameless Media with a following, but built community over time.
How do you do it? That’s a whole other blog post. But a few tips:
If you’re not comfortable being on camera, hire a social/content specialist who is.
Document the journey, from product testing and HQ building to finalising brand identity and testing competitors (tastefully).
Tap into the spaces your target audience frequents (digitally).
TLDR;
You don’t need a following to launch a successful, hot brand.
You definitely need a genuine Unique Selling Point, though.
You then need a thoughtful, strategic, and expansive brand foundation.
You can then bring people along for the journey and build a community.
If you’re ready for the third, so are we.
